Having Anxiety. Music can Help!

I personally have been dealing with social anxiety all my life and having music in my life has been a big contributor in coping with the anxiety. Music can be used as a distraction and is effective in people who can be easily absorbed in stressful activities (Nauert, R). It can create a calming place to go to when you are having anxiety attacks or just feeling overwhelmed. It can be a great coping mechanism for people you are facing anxiety every day.

2 Things that Helped Me:

1. Headphones:
Being in a big college full of unrecognizable people was really stressful for me. When I was feeling overwhelmed, I would bring out my headphones and play my favorite songs. Playing the songs distracted me from the people around me and calmed me down a lot. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take out your headphones and play your favorite songs to help distract you. Singing and dancing can also help with the distraction.

2. Doing Performing Arts:
Being in dance for 6 years really brought me out to talk to more people. Even though, I really didn't have any close friends from that experience, I did open up a bit. A few years later, I joined band and that was when my anxiety slowly decreased. Band really helped me to not be afraid to do silly things in front of people or to make friends. Playing music also helped me calm down when I was having a terrible day or just facing anxiety attacks. Joining the performing arts can be really helpful to you if you are facing anxiety. It relaxes the brain and can help greatly with memory.

How to Cope with Stress of College

College can be one of the most stressful times in your life. There are several things that can help you cope with the stress but music can be the simplest thing you could do. Its inexpensive and a fast-acting solution that is always nearby.  Music has the ability to quickly shift your mood, affecting the part of your mind where stress and negative thoughts settle. It can bring a more joyful emotion in you and help make college a little bit easier everyday (Fitzpatrick, F).

5 Things That You Can do With Music:

1. Waking up with Music:
Having an alarm play music when you wake up can help you start out with a better mood. It would be best to have familiar music playing when you wake up. Playing music while you get ready can increase your mood, making it a great start to your day.

2. Playing with music:
Playing an instrument and playing music that you love can help your brain get active. Music can even help your physical well-being just by playing an instrument.

3. Thinking more positively:
Our brains are wired to think negatively and to hold more negative impressions. Music can help our brains relax and distract us of everyday problems. Thinking of a song in your head can also help our brains think more positively.

4. Exercise with Music:
If you exercise daily, bring music with you. It can make it easier to do the exercises, especially if you are playing your favorite songs. Exercise itself can relive build up tension but doing it with music can enhance the affect.

5. Listening to music in the background:
When doing homework, listening to music in the background can help you focus at the task at hand. You should turn off everything that can be distracting and turn on music. Playing instrumental music would be the best option because it would be less distracting than having a song with words playing.

Facts:
Performing arts (playing an instrument or acting) can increase the memory of students and their learning abilities. Singing or listening to music can help a student get through school (Brown, L). Music can reduce stress because of it's link with our emotions, making it an excellent tool to cope with stress. It can absorb our attention and can act as a distraction to everyday life. Singing can also be a great release of tension (Collingwood, J).

About the author:
I have a very big background dealing with music; I danced for 6 years and was in band for 6 years. Having social anxiety through most of my life, band and playing music with my band mates really helped me cope with the anxiety I was facing. If I was feeling sad or upset, going to band and playing up beat music really helped my emotion and by the end of the day, I was feeling very happy. Even today, dealing with all this stress with college, I listen to music to help calm me down and focus on organizing my life. I'm so dedicated to music and how its impacted my life, I have tattoo of a treble clef and bass clef. Without music, I would probably be an emotional wreck and possibly crazy.
